A mother asks for napkins. We say "they're over on the condiments table." Nope, she says, none there.
My coworker keeps trying to point her towards one end of the table (which he can't see) but I thought ya know, we might just be out ... people walking past the store tend to reach over and help themselves even if they're not our customers. So I grab a couple of paper towels and go over to her. She's with a girl of about 8, who's standing there with one fist clenched.
Mother: "Yeah, she stuck her hand right under the tap just as she opened it." (We have large containers of various teas sitting around for people to sample. And yes, the teas are hot. Not scalding, thankfully, but they are hot.)
Me: "Uh ... wow, I'm really sorry. I hope she's OK."
Mother, as she's wiping off the girl's hand: "Well, she's not likely to do it again, that's for sure."
And off they went.
Me:
I mean, holy crap ... no complaints about having hot tea sitting around, no threats to sue, no demands to talk to the manager?!?
If I recognized her again, I swear I'd give them each a free tea. Especially Mom.
