  • My Mum can be so understanding

This week we've had a record heatwave. It hasn't dropped below 30 degrees since 7:00am yesterday, and today we were apparently the hottest city in the world!

I went over to visit Mum tonight, who (along with most rational people) decided that tonight was not the night to cook, and ordered pizza.

Anyway, we get the pizza delivered, and they've forgotten one of the pizza's. So Mum calls back, and the pizza store is very apologetic and get the pizza out for us with a free drink (Mum said it sounded like they were getting slammed and were making many mistakes).

So we wait a little longer for the remaining pizza, and by the time it comes, the poor driver has accidentally given our free drink to the previous order and appeared to be quite stressed. He offered to go back to the store and get another drink, but Mum saw that the driver looked that terrified that he would probably cop a blasting if he did that, so she said to him that it didn't matter.

I was really impressed with my Mum when she did that, and it probably helped calm the poor driver down a bit from what was clearly a stressful night for the drivers - dealing with a flat out night driving around in 40+ degree heat (and that's at 7:30pm)!

Good on your mum! Sometimes even being in the right doesn't mean you should press an issue. Be careful yourselves in that heat down there, ok?

      Thanks SMS001.

Yeah doing all the right things - basically operating off two water bottles at the moment (one I'm drinking, one in the freezer chilling), but doing the right things like staying indoors during the day, drinking a heap of water etc.

So far we've had 163 people in hospital due to the heat, but thankfully no fatalities so far.

Most hair raising part of the heatwave was driving home from work Tuesday during an electrical storm, and a bolt of lightning landed literally 25 metres in front of my car. Gave me a bit of a startle seeing lightning that close (basically a 3D zig zag from nowhere), but as Mum put it tonight - if I was driving an extra 1 km/h faster I probably would have been hit!

A cool change is coming in tomorrow night, so the weekend looks very pleasant - 28 on Saturday and Sunday

I had the stereo blaring, which drowned out the thunder completely.

I got the massive thunder clap when I got home though!

For those interested, here's a local news article on the heatwave

And the heat's back next week, with another 'official' heatwave (5 consecutive days over 35 or 3 consecutive days over 40) forecast for next weekend.
