I have recently moved to a small rural town - one that has had a very strong community spirit forged out of hardship.
Sometimes, it is an honour to live here, especially as per the example below:
The scene: local supermarket
Characters: a whole lot of customers, including myself and several customer service reps.
Word had spread that a longtime employee, who had frequently helped the community when floods and storms hit, had become very gravely ill - and his family were struggling.
Every one in the line (including me), donated their change (plus extra) to the manager to give to the family.
In a week, over 10K was raised...
But what really touched the family and everyone else, was the messages of support posted on the supermarket's message board, messages like:
"Don't worry about a thing mate, we've got your back"
Good news is, the gentleman is recovering well!
