  • At least one server understands my audit job better now

So, my main job is as an internal auditor at a small casino. Basically I find and fix mistakes. On Friday I had the following conversation with one of our servers who was understandably upset and started out a bit confrontational but ended really well.

Server: Hey, what the hell man, I was shorted $40 on my tips by the cashier last Friday. Why haven't you fixed it yet and gotten them to pay out my tips? Isn't that your job.
Me: I know, I'm sorry, I didn't even see the discrepancy until yesterday. There was already a note attached to the paperwork that (manager) was aware of it and was working on fixing it and I hadn't had a chance to follow up.
Server: How could you not notice it until Thursday? It's been nearly a week.
Me: I know, but I only 16 hours a week that are guaranteed to be able to work on food and beverage, technically I have 8 hours working on cage, 16 on food and beverage, and 16 on slots, I often times find ways to cut down how much time I dedicate to slots, but still looking at 20 hours a week. I simply don't have time to follow up on everything.
Server: I thought all you did was food and beverage.
Me: No, I do a little of everything, the only person who specializes in only one thing is (main slots person), everyone else does a bit of everything. I'm sorry that you fell through the cracks, I'll find (manager) and find out why he hasn't fixed it yet and get you your paid out by the end of the day.
Server: Seriously, only 2 days a week to fix everything that we screw up in an entire week.
    Me: Basically.
Server: Wow, sorry, I just figured you were being lazy and putting off doing it. I really need the money, so please, please get it done today, but I'm sorry I snapped at you. If I had known just how many different ways they had you pulled I definitely would have gone through (manager) first.

In fairness, given what the managers tell the F&B employees about me, she'd be right to think I was lazy... the managers are telling them that I do nothing but review F&B paperwork fixing mistakes and making little mini rainbows of awesome appear all over the property. If you were under the impression that someone's sole job was to find and fix mistakes like a tips paid variance, yeah, you'd think they were lazy when it wasn't fixed nearly immediately. If there is anyone I would complain about it is whichever manager she went to to report the tips shortage... most likely they told her that she didn't need to worry about it because Smiley's sole job is to find and fix these mistakes, rather than taking the initiative to fix it (as they are supposed to do)... and even if I wanted to fix it, I legally could not handle the whole thing anyway (as a gaming card holder I cannot physically handle any casino cash that I will also be handling the journal entry for), so basically my role is to confirm for the manager that a tips shortage did occur and after the manager fixed it, record that it has been fixed.
