  • Awesome Embassy Suites

So hubby and I are staying at an Embassy Suites at the moment while we search for a new (wheelchair-accessible) apartment. The hotel offers a shuttle service but they don't have a van with a ramp. I talked to the GM and asked about other options. ADA law says they have to make alternative arrangements, so I expected they'd call us a cab from one of the companies that has wheelchair accessible vehicles. That would mean a long wait for every trip (the cab companies have about one wheelchair van for every 20 regular taxis) but meh.

What they actually did was rent a wheelchair accessible van for the entire week we'll be here! The hotel shuttle drivers have been shown how to use it and it's available whenever we want to go somewhere. So they'll be getting a really good review.

    Wow, that is amazing!

Our insurance company has put us up in a Quality Inn [house burnt down on the 10th] until they can sort out a short term lease [looks like it needs to be about 6 months] though they didn't have a handicapped room, they went out and purchased a shower seat for me! With the seat, I told them they didn't need to worry about getting me into one of the handicapped rooms.

Unfortunately the housing coordinator is having issues finding a pet friendly [cat] handicapped accessible or ground floor no stairs at all short term lease for me. On the lucky side for her, with Rob working in Hartford, it expands the areas she can look for housing in.

I have never had a bad experience at the Embassy Suites. They are frequently on the list of hotels around children's hospitals that offer discounts for families, and I've used them in a couple cities. Their weekly hospital rates are generally lower than most places' daily rates. But they don't skimp on service just because you're getting a really good rate. When we stayed in one near Seattle, they upgraded me to a two bedroom suite, took my car in for some maintenance work (I paid for it, but they had staff take me to the hospital, then take the car to the shop, retrieved me and took me to the shop to pick it up), prepared breakfast early for me the morning I needed to be at the hospital at 5am and waived the wifi fee, among other little things. It really made the whole experience much less traumatic than it could have been.
