This happened at the end of my shift today.
Young coworker comes up with a very small order and asks if she can get cash back. I say yes, but not with her phone ... you can't "tap" and get cash back; you must insert your card (my own belief is that our technology is ridiculously outdated) and her face falls. She only has her phone.
She needs the cash for bus fare to get home (this is around 7:45 p.m. and it's quite dark -- and cold -- out there).
Customer behind her asks how much she needs.
"Three seventy-five."
(Ye gods, NO WONDER hardly anybody takes the bus anymore!!"
Customer hands her $4 in cash. Girl stammers her thanks and leaves to catch her bus.
When I check the customer out, I use a special code we've got (and are not supposed to use anymore because gods forbid *anything* get in the way of the company's insane profit levels) to remove the cost of one item ... that just happens to come out at $3.99. I do tell her what I've done so just in case she's one of those rare people who checks their receipt, she doesn't feel that it's an error that must be corrected.
Customer: "Oh, you didn't have to do that!"
Me: "Well, you didn't have to give her the bus fare either." (said with a sincere smile)
Customer: "Well, I'm a mom. I wouldn't want my daughter having to find a way to get home on a night like this because she didn't have bus fare!"
All around, it was a nice way to end the shift.
