  • Saluting the Cat Treat Lady

    Dear Cat Treat Lady,

If you are reading this, you know who you are and who I am. You are the single most awesome retail customer I've ever come across, and had I found this site while I still worked for Red Dog Blue Cat Company, I would have saluted you here far earlier, when I still saw you at least every couple of weeks.

You came into the store frequently to buy treats for your dogs and for the pets of your clients, who you helped to buy houses with amenities for pets- you're the only realtor I've ever met who specializes in families with pets, which makes you totally cool already. But there's more. Every time you dropped by- and that's a LOT- you bought treats for the shelter cats waiting for adoption in the cages near the front. When we had shelter dogs visit on the weekends, you bought them treats and bones to chew to make the boredom of lying in a crate all day bearable. When Jack the Pit/Lab mix was at the store waiting for adoption for weeks, you came to see him and play with him to break up the monotony of his day, and even tried to talk your father in law into adopting him.

If you'd been by on my day off, I always knew it by the Feline Greenies in the cat cages and the bags and bags of them in the cabinet with the cat food. You were never stingy- many times you bought a whole bag for each cat, even though they wouldn't eat very many each day!

You were always smiling and remembered not only my name, but how to pronounce it, which is not easy with my name. You came through my check lane even if others were open, to chat about your pets, your business, and the cats up for adoption that week. You volunteered to clean cat cages at another local store where, unlike ours, the employees weren't responsible for kitty cleanup every morning. I never saw you in a bad mood or with anything less than a big grin on, and it brightened my day to see you walk in the store because I knew you would be kind and friendly, and would leave goodies for the kitties.

When I quit Red Dog Blue Cat Company, I knew I would miss you and my other cool regulars more than anything about the job itself.

It was great seeing you the other day at a different pet store where apparently we both shop- you're even cooler now that I know you buy a great brand of dog food and from a small, independent retailer I love! I told you where I'm working now, but the very next day, I was offered a new job. I hope you come to see me on my last weekend with my current store, but if you don't, I apologize, and I told all the employees there to give you my regrets that I wasn't where I said I would be if you wanted to come visit- you said you'd come next weekend, but you might be busy, and I'll really regret not getting a chance to tell you where I'm going next. It was so nice of you to say it just isn't the same shopping at my old store without me there to catch up with.

Thank you, Cat Treat Lady, for being the coolest retail customer ever, and keep it up- the kitties count on those goodies every time you come in!
