when i took my store over, it was a rip roaring clusterf@@@. sales were down, it was dirty and no one wanted to ahop in it. i turned it around and after 3 months of living in the store, it was at a decent level. not where i wanted it but better than it was.
one day, this elderly woman comes up to me and says
ms x: are you the manager?
me: (oh oh now what) yes can i help u?
ms x: i just wanted to tell you what a good job your doing. i almost stopped coming in this store was just filthy and cluttered and i could never find anything. you doing a fine job.
me: thank you but i'm not done yet.
made my day. from then on she called it her store and she made it a point to talk to me and seek me out every day. sweet woman- i wish they were all that way.
fast forward a year- found out wife and i were expecting our first child. tell mrs x and she promises me a gift. no no, that ok you don't have to do that. she insists. her visits decrease as pregnancy goes by due to ms x having health problems. baby is born and i haven't seen ms x in weeks. she comes in (her last visit before going to the nursing home- alzheimers is a nasty disease) and hands me a hand croched blanket for my baby. pats me on the hand and walks out. i miss her.
