  • Very Nice Customer!

So Saturday was graduation day at the university (for most of the colleges, with a few exceptions.) Since most of the non-graduating students aren't in town (aside from people like me who work here over the summer), it means it's a generally slow time for us--except we do get a ton of catering orders, party platters, giant subs et cetera.

We also get a lot of people coming in to Subway who order the equivalent of a catering order right in the line. I don't think this is SC behavior, because it's our job to make subs--it probably inconveniences others somewhat, but I think a lot of people genuinely don't know you can order days in advance at Subway.

So a middle aged woman comes in and places an order for eight subs, all pretty individualized. I ask her if I can see the paper she has them written down on, as that usually makes ordering less painful. Unfortunately a lot of the people who ordered subs were very non-specific, so we had to go back and forth for awhile to really peg down what was needed on each sub.

It was a long order, when it was all done, she got eight bags of chips, eight bottles of water, and eight cookies. The whole time, she kept saying, "I know you'll hate me, but.." and truth be told, I didn't really mind at all. When someone is polite and reasonable, then just because they are making me work (when I'm at work) I'm not going to be bothered at all.

When it was all said and done she pulled out a $10 and asked if she could give it to me, I felt bad accepting a $10 tip on a ~$60 order considering this is a fast food place (more or less.) But I told her if she wanted, we had a tip jar, so she put the money in there.

I even helped her carry her order to her car in a big chip box I emptied out (it was kind of unwieldy otherwise.)

What's funny, is right behind her was this old man who comes in about once a month. He always orders "5 foot longs" all turkey, all lettuce, tomato, mayo. He gets them all wrapped individually, and while his order isn't a pain to make (because it's all the same stuff, simple toppings) he's incredibly rude without fail. He's just someone who seems like he is permanently, 24/7 angry at the world.

He only comes in on Saturdays because our owner and him have a long-standing hatred of one another, and the owner is never here on Saturdays (the owner once charged him for 10 6" subs because he said if you get each one individually wrapped and bagged, it is like 10 six-inch subs.)

What's great is, he came in right after the woman with the 8-sub order. And he kept making snide comments the whole time, like "some people really hold the line up when they order so much stuff." Which I find ridiculous since he orders the equivalent of 1-party platter like clock work each month, without giving any advanced notice--guaranteeing that he is going to slow down the line for other customers.

[Just as an aside, to anyone who ever wants a lot of Subway food--ordering party platters is probably your best bet. You can get in and out quickly, and most Subways will not mind mixing and matching all the different cold subs. I would probably ask for veggies on the side though, as some Subways will make up the catering orders in the morning and some veggies get kinda soggy in such situations.

While I've always found making giant subs fun--even though most of my coworkers hate them--IMO the pricing on the giant subs is such that you are paying a lot for a huge amount of bread but not as much meat as you might imagine, the platters are a better value.]
