A few weeks ago, I was in a grocery store picking up a few things. Just as I got to the register, the registers went down. Everyone stayed calm though.
A manager kept us informed and found registers that worked. One clerk began to count things out with a calculator (that I could see). The clerks were all polite and just did their best.
As for the customers, everyone chilled in line and waited untill things started working again. A few people had to leave, as they were on a schedual, but none stormed out, they just gave their carts to the clerks and left. I didn't hear any fits.
As I was rung out, I made sure to comment to the clerk that I thought everyone was handling things as well as they could.
