  • You ROCK!

So I was put onto Texas Shootout the last couple nights. Now I HATE that game for numerous reasons, the main one being that I'm slow as hell at seeing the hands because I have just learned poker hands. I was telling one of the supes about it, she's very nice about it, and gives me a couple tips and such before I started my shift.

So I've been dealing for about 4 or 5 hours, and I'm starting to make mistakes, stupid ones, but they add up. My head is pounding and my back hurts (I really think this game is bad physically for dealers), when I get tapped off from my break the supe pulls me over and asks if I'd like to stay on that table or switch with someone, and I tell her that Switching would be the most awesome thing right now.

So I got to go and deal another game (and I managed to make $75 in tips off a drunk guy in like 10 minutes ).

I love when people actually care whether or not you are happy at work (I'm sure we all do ) She even commented on how much louder and more willing to talk I was on that table than I was on Shootout. So to her a great big YOU ROCK!

Hehe! I'm glad for you! This makes me miss being a dealer. Now, I warn you, I was not at a real casino- it was a local rig setup on one floor of a bar to emulate a real atmosphere. Our pitboss was real enough, she had worked for the Empress in Chicago for a handful of years.

Even though there was no real money moving on the table (aside from the $1 buy in ) she made sure we handled things like a real casino; as far as handling cheques and tapping out for breaks. I was one of her favorite dealers, since I ended up learning Craps 2 days before opening night. It took longer than that to get it all down, but I love the game now XD.

In any case, I loved the atmosphere, and miss it. They closed us down after realising that it just wasn't generating enough extra money (the theory was they'd pay for drinks to pretend to gamble, instead of the other way around, I guess). Ah well! Fun times while it lasted and if I ever get up the nerve to attempt dealer school, I'll have some EXP.

I keep hearing about dealer school, I took a 2 week paid blackjack course to work at the casino I'm at, the other two games I know I learned through shadowing other dealers, and there are the poker and roulette courses as well (neither of which I've taken). Is it more difficult to get a dealing job in the US. I'm just curious.

I haven't looked into it too far, as it's illegal to gamble in my state and therefore nothing in the neighborhood to get me started. But the deails I gleamed from my 'Boss are as such:

There's a lotta people wanting to be dealers, as it can be very good money. 'Dealer School' is where everyone has to get started, mainly by learning to cut cheques professionally and quickly (nothing but this for a week or two, as I hear it). Then you learn BJ, and once you're seasoned on the floor a bit you can move on to other games.

I believe it's a couple grand for the training, but I don't think it's more than a month or so. I'm sure if I went to the effort I could google some info, but I'm at work and can only have so many distractions at once :P

Oh okay, yeah, seems like it's a lot easier here. At least where I am. And we were paid hourly for our training, we didn't have to pay them. We learned Chipping for most of our course too, as well as card handling and such. I don't think that we're as well paid here, I only make $9.35 an hour, which is $1.35 over minimum wage. Tips vary, so I can't really say what the hourly would be with that.

          Thanks for the info!
