I had a lady walk through my express line today and she asked me for a carton of cigarettes. She was a very pleasant woman who I actually talked to for a while since there was nobody in line. She thanked me heartily for my service and she was one who I genuinely mean it when I say 'Have a nice day' to.
Now, here's the kicker.
We're having a program called 'Feed the Need' where we have already made bags full of food that people buy and put in the store donation box for needy families. The lady comes back to my line with one of the bags and says,
"If I can afford to buy cigarettes, I can sure afford to buy food for the hungry."
I swear, I wanted to give her some sort of award. That is exactly the kind of thing I needed to hear, and that is just the right logic that will keep me living life and working this job.
Thank you, good customer. You made my day.
