  • Mix of helpfulness...

I'm praising several of my coworkers at this stage.

Background: We do offer a parcel pickup service i.e. customer checks out and pays, we store their groceries, they drive around and pick them up. Technically, WE'RE meant to load it up for them, but a lot of customers have helped us load it up.

    Car Service
While we do offer car service i.e. we'll offer to help someone take their shopping out to their car, we don't advertise it. We do try and encourage the parcel pickup service, but if they only have maybe three or four bags, it kind of makes the idea moot. Many of my coworkers, even the newer ones, have taken to asking some of our elderly or disabled customers if they would like someone to help take their shopping out to their car for them. It makes me feel proud because while some of them are dense at times, they're still offering the service.

    Left Behinds

This is probably commonplace, but the usual store policy for any paid for left behind is to take it to the service desk. Many of us have risked it and gone chasing after the customer if they've left their bag behind. Ditto for a credit card. A few of us have received compliments for fast reactions. One coworker I know, as well as myself, have had to chase customers as far as the fruit and veg store about three stores down from us. (Usually we get them within five metres of the store)

    Ill Lady

We also had an incident a while ago where a customer had a dizzy spell and needed to sit down. We offered her water and checked up on her every now and then, (she's fine ) but nowadays, if we spot an elderly customer sitting on their own while their son/daughter/wife/husband is grabbing a few extra items, some of my coworkers have offered them water or something to read (provided that we keep an eye on them). While they've usually declined the offers, I'm glad that they're still offering them.

    Bambini...

This is my sighting, but when I went interstate on vacation with my family, there was an Italian restaurant near us. Very good food and at one stage, we were the only people there. So the waiter and the host, for the entire night, kept praising us, getting us more water and everything. He even gave me and my sister a free gelati because "he didn't have any kids so he wanted to spoil us." Being called bambini for the rest of the night didn't seem so bad after that...

    Tip Lady
Background: Tipping is not usually done in Australia. Especially not to retail staff.

When I was in my local discount store today, buying some stuff for Adelaide Cup Day (I needed a flower for my hair) and a customer came up with some small things. Shortly after, one of the staff came up with a trolley that had a table on it,obviously to help her take it out to her car. She turns to him and goes "here, if you'd like a $50..." the response was "no, thanks, it's fine."
