I love my managers. While there may be some things that we'll butt heads over (like the inconsistency of what counts for termination i.e. someone will get fired over the smallest of things, yet harassment/assault don't seem to be the case)
But the best thing I've found is that they'll back me up 100% on ANYTHING, provided that we prove it to the customer first and that it's not illegal/unethical. Want those broken candy eggs discounted? As long as management sees it, he'll negotiate it. Want the INTACT ones discounted? Nooo way.
Violation of scanning policy? Sure, we'll do it with a smile. (SCanning policy in Australia is that if the scanned item is higher than the shelf price, first one is free, rest are at the shelf price, anything over $50 does not apply, it also doesn't apply to certain goods) Want us to violate it further and give you those twenty cans of cat food for free because of scanning policy? Uh, no.
Want compensation for our screwups? Definite no. (exception is injury caused by our neglect, but if you tell us to ignore it because you want to be served RIGHT THEN and THEN you injure yourself...)
Also, if they bear witness to abusive customers-no way are you getting anything for free, I will not be fired unless they can see I have been rude and the best part...if we're really stressed because we're without plastic bags, they'll switch us out.
