I have a lot of awesome customers, but this guy was just made me smile and gave me a bit of my hope for humanity back.
I was on register about a year, maybe a year and a half back and ringing up this one guy who comes in fairly often during the summer. He's always really nice and just pleasant to have in the store in general (not something I can usually say about tourists who come to the town I work in).
Anyway, I'm ringing him up and there's an elderly woman talking to a friend of hers behind him. He looks at me as I finish ringing through his things and says, "Go ahead and add hers to my bill, too."
Now I'm on express, so her order didn't add more than maybe $10 to his total, so I go ahead and add them. She's still talking and doesn't really notice. He pays, tells me to have a nice day and then pats the woman on the shoulder and says the same. Of course, she looked confused because who the hell wouldn't when a stranger you weren't even talking to tells you to have a nice day?
Now she looks at me and notices all her things are bagged, but hasn't noticed that there's nothing on the total screen we have for the customers (we have two screens; the one I type on and another that shows all items purchased and the total) and asks what she owes me. I had the biggest grin plastered on my face when I told her the gentleman ahead of her had paid for her things.
She asked me who he was, but all I can really do at this point is shrug and tell her that he's a summer resident. Both she and her friend smiled and kinda marveled at the fact that someone could be that nice, wished me a good day and also left.
It's kind of amazing how little things like that stick in your mind for so long. I'm really looking forward to seeing him again this summer.
