  • No, sir, thank YOU

Every once in a while when things seem their bleakest someone surprises me. Tonight a guest came down to the desk to have his key cards reactivated. As per policy, I have to card the guest to make sure it's the correct person getting into the room.

Me: May I see your ID?
C (just abbrevieted "C" since he's not "SC") Yes you may. Thank you.

These are the ones that keep you going. When you're being thanked for being diligent with upholding policy.
To right the countless wrongs of our days... We shine this light of true redemption, that this place may become as paradise...Oh, what a wonderful world such would be...

That's awesome. He obviously appreciates your measures to ensure his security.

I'm a really lousy judge of age, so I play it safe and card pretty much anyone that doesn't have noticeable gray hair. If they're a regular then I just card them once and generally remember them.

I've had a couple of coworkers get a little miffed when I card them. No customers yet though - the older ones usually tell me I made their day.

The oldest one I've carded so far was born in 1971. Whoops. I had him pegged for 29 or 30 (state law says I have to card anybody that appears to be under 30). I get carded in my OWN store pretty often and I'm almost 31.

I feel the same way. Though it rarely happens its a pleasant surprise when people thank me for checking ID when their credit cards aren't signed. Somewhat makes up for the a-holes who chew me out over it. Don't try to explain to THAT group that you're just trying to protect THEM from identity theft. Of course I'm not trying to protect their identity, I just get off on calling them dirty liars!

We must cherish the good experiences. Those glimmers of hope.

I wish I could check ID when I see "See ID" clearly written on someone's card. But since they're using the self service card readers, I really can't.

I am encouraged to ask for ID if their card won't read (I get these a few times a day) before I punch in the card number. I usually don't unless the card isn't signed or it has See ID written on it.

Oh, one store I worked at actually took advantage of that... they had a sign put up saying "why of course you still look young enough to show ID... you must tell us what you do to keep looking so good"

This is actually kind of sad, because what that guy said shouldn't be special, it's what the standard response should be. Is this what our country is coming to, where we make a big deal over general politeness? Oh well, at least there are some polite people out there.
Edit: Actually, I meant your country since I'm in Canada.
