Thank you, cool lady, for accepting my no on the coupon today, without complaining at all. And you were cheerful about it! I said, "I'm sorry," because I really thought you should've been able to use it--dumb policy--and you said, "Oh, no problem. I understand." Total bright spot.

I haven't had many people go SC when I refuse to take a coupon. We even accept competitors coupons - yes, even Central Market's $10 off of any purchase of $30 or more coupons. We'll take pretty much any coupon, as long as it's not expired.
But if the coupon is even 1 day out of date, it's a very, very firm "Sorry, this coupon is expired, I can't take it". Even competitor coupons (even though we don't redeem them, we just throw them away). If I take an expired coupon, the value of the coupon is deducted from my cash for the day - I don't get any points on my record for being under $3 off, but anything over that and I get points on my record.
So far I've never taken an expired or otherwise invalid coupon, my trainer drilled into me how important it was to make damn sure it was a valid coupon before accepting it.
