  • Making me cry in a GOOD way

This is a tale from my waitressing days. This was the first (and so far, only) waitressing job I'd had, and in the beginning I was...not good. I was a hard worker, but I got rattled and confused easily.
Anyway, this happened a couple of months into my "career" at Sports Bar Restaurant. I was finally good enough to handle a large party on my own. The reservation said they were expecting 8-12 people, so I set up a 12-top in my section and got ready.
Well, it turned out that WAY more than 12 people showed up. Apparently it was some kind of school reunion, and many people didn't RSVP, but showed up anyway. At first I freaked out, but they were all very nice and understanding when I had to drag over additional tables and chairs from anywhere we could spare them. There was not an SC in the bunch! They ate, and drank, and talked for a couple of hours, and ran up a considerable bill. Since there were more than 8 of them, I got to add the autograt (18%) to the bill. The autograt came to $90, and when they paid the bill, they added an extra $50 on top of that, because they said I did such a good job adapting to their larger-than-expected group and just being good in general. (And yes, they did know that the autograt was already on the bill.)

I went in the back of the house and cried. For once it was for a GOOD reason.

Wow! How cool! And the $50.00 tip in addition to the Autograt? Wow, again! I mean, I think an addtional $10.00 or $20.00 would have been generous, but more than 50% of the Autograt? They rawked!

This actually gave me kind of a weird thought. It would be nice if being an SC could be made illegal. Then, much like going to "traffic school" for a driving violation, SC's would have to go to "SC school".

Then if a videotape could have been made of this group, and how they treated you, it would be shown to the SC's to educate them on proper customer behavior.

Great to see. I always like to make sure that if I had good service, that there is recognition.

Our family went out to a restaurant for a Birthday dinner, as my birthday and my youngest daughters birthday are quite close. My daughter, of course, mentioned that it was her birthday to the waitress when she politely asked why we were at dinner that evening.

After dinner, with no prompting or arrangement from my wife or myself, our daughter got a special birthday dessert, (no charge) and a free restaurant t-shirt. A chorus of happy birthday, and all arranged by our waitress with no prompting or request from us.

After the meal, I went to the counter and asked to see the manager.

I mentioned our waitress's name, and told the manager that the waitress had done a fantastic job, and had made our evening quite memorable.

Then I turned to the waitress, said thanks again, and tipped her $50.

It was worth it! Reading your story reminded me why it felt so good to do that too!
