I am a science teacher, as mentioned before.
My other and equally important duties include pastoral care - something I take very seriously - ut it is there that my faith in humanity is renewed constantly.
You see, most students and nearly all the teachers (inc. me) are 'quiet' volunteers in some respect or another. Here are some examples:
- senior students building a house in Thailand (Habitat for humanity)
- raising funds and collecting resources for charities, schools in Developing nations etc...
Then there is one senior student that just about defines humble - she says she has a bad soul...why?
because she has a lot and those in her home country do not - so when a horrific natural disaster occurred in her country - she raised money for the Red Cross to help and to go part way into 'repaying her privelaged life'.
We had an awful event occur a couple of years back - a young staff member (and one of my best friends) - newly married and a new mum - suddenly passed away - it crushed us teachers, but most of all- it devastated the kindergarten class she taught...
...the students stepped up and made sure, in their own quiet way, that none of us fell.
...and people ask me why do I still teach?
