  • I've never been wished that before...

I had just gotten a bit of breathing room on register, so I grabbed my water bottle to get a drink. Off to the side, I heard a very proper British accent exclaim "We don't have time for you to be standing around drinking!" Startled, I looked up to see a tiny woman standing with her hands on her hips, grinning at me in a way I can only describe as cheeky. I saluted her with the bottle, answered, "Well, -I- have all day!" in my best drawl and took another quick swallow before ringing her up. She thought it was great! We had a great chat as I rang her up. But her parting line was better than her opening:

    Me: Have a great day!
Her: *pauses* I'm NOT going to wish you a nice day.
    Me:
Her: I...am going to wish YOU...polite customers!
    Me: Thank you!

That kept me going all day.
It's little things that make the difference between 'enjoyable', 'tolerable', and 'gimme a spoon, I'm digging an escape tunnel'.

    aww, that's too cute!
I always tell people "may your shift pass by quickly".
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose. ~George Carlin.

I had one, barely somewhat similar today.

I always, always have either water or orange juice at my register, and regularly take a swig between customers.

Someone walked up while I was emptying the last of my OJ. I said "Hey there, how are you?" while trying to swallow a mouthful of OJ. She smiled and said good.

Then a bagger walked up. Same question. How are you? Blah.

Then I asked the customer "How are you tonight?", she started looking a little confused.

Bagger then asked her again "How are you tonight?" after she'd answered me... again.

Customer finally laughed and said OKAY I GET IT! I'm FINE! STOP!

I looked at the bagger, back at the customer, and said "Did we ask how you were doing yet? How are you?". That one got the look of death from the customer and a dirty as hell look... that she couldn't hold, she wound up cracking up about 30 seconds into it.

After the transaction I apologized to her and said that we were VERY easily amused and probably took advantage of the situation. She giggled and said it was fine.

I also had someone tell me "Well I hope you get good customers all day!" at the beginning of my shift today. And I did. YAY!
