  • High end audio shop kindness

Near my house is a high end audio shop, that is running a sale on McIntosh audio gear. I can't by far afford any of it (the amp I was drooling over cost $4k. I don't even have 1/10th of that right now.) To boot, I don't exactly dress rich either. I've been wearing the same style for years, worn out wal-mart brand jeans, and a t-shirt. Coupled with a shaggy beard, and unkempt hair, and I look like a hobo.

Wife and I walked in since she'd never heard hi-fi audio, and I get a sort of high from hearing high quality music, and the guy running the place greeted us, offered to give us a demo of anything in the shop, including some $40k speakers, a $60k home theater setup, or anything else. We just sat in one of the back rooms and listened to the music for a bit before heading out. He definitely knew we weren't able to buy, as I told him outright. As we left, he said, "If you get bored, stop by, we'll fire up the theater room or something."

When I have the money, I'll definitely be buying from them. I really expected a "no looky loos! get out!" but instead got a friendly greeting and a "Here's a $4,000 stereo hooked up to $5,000 speakers. I've turned it up for you, have a listen. I'll be over here in another room if you have any questions."
    Coworker: Distro of choice?
    Me: Gentoo.
Coworker: Ahh. A Masochist. I thought so.

You know, all the audiophiles I know are also a bit on the shaggy side Perhaps because they have different priorities when spending their money. It's definitely a treat to be able to experience that sort of service without having to be subjected to judgmental sales clerks. Hopefully when you do purchase that stereo then you'll be able to buy from that clerk and he'll get a nice commission!
