More than once at my old job we've had husbands sent in with orders from wives to pick up thread or fabric or yarn or whatever. This 80 year old man was always coming in with notes from his wife who was bedridden, but still very busy with her sewing and knitting and everything. She made me the nicest hand sewn quilt. Anywho, he's not all there, and I was always more than happy to help him. I always picked everything out for him.
He started calling me lisa (not my name) I guess he told his wife about me because the next note he brought in explained that lisa was one of their grandchildren who had died. I don't know what from. So I wrote down my schedule so I'd always be there to help him. We started sending notes back and forth to each other. Pretty soon everyone started taking care of him. I was always lisa, the other girls he just made names up for them. Pretty soon whenever he was leaving we'd have whoever was in the back text his wife to let her know he had gotten here and was heading home (physically weak, mentally awesome!). I don't think he should have been driving, but you know old people.
Once she sent him in with a quilt for me. I finally got to meet her a week after I quit. Don't worry, one of my other CWs has taken over caring for him. One of my students now happens to be their grandchild. She sends notes in with him now, I've dropped him off before when he wanted to stay after for help. The reason I posted this is because today I got her e-mail address. Yes, e-mail. Now we can chat back and forth when I move to another school in a few weeks.
