Goldie is a Carolina Dog... also known as the American Dingo. They're a breed of pariah dog that is believed to have been the pack dog that the Native Americans used before the Spaniards brought horses to the Americas. For those who live in the South, you may have seen them in the swamp areas, where they're often referred to as "yeller dogs" (yellow dogs in Southernese). If you've read about Old Yeller, you've read about a Carolina Dog! You can find out about them here: http://www.carolinadogs.com/
She was caught wild as a pup and taken to a shelter, where they had her listed as a shepherd-mix. I knew she wasn't a shepherd when I got her, but didn't know for sure what she was until I saw a National Geographic special about pariah dogs, and there was a whole pack that looked just like her bounding across the screen.
Thanks to everyone for the support and advice. I'm going to look into those links that have been provided. Once things settle down, I'm thinking that there needs to be an organization to help people with service dogs who need emergency vet care. At the very least there should be a website where people can find in formation on local and national assistance.

He is my Black Dragon (and yes, a good one) strong, protective, the guardian. I am his Silver Dragon, always by his side, shining for him, cherishing him.
