  • To the little lady with the parrot flashlight....

You made my day. First you looked at my coworker and told her you weren't going to bother her because she looked busy (she was cleaning up the credit slips in her drawer) and walked over to me and asked if I would please ring up your item. Then you told me your parents were members, and when I couldn't find them via phone number, asked if I could look them up by name. You then said that if I couldn't, could I please hold your item until you could go ask them what the correct number was (her parents were in the cycling department). When we found the membership via the parents name and address, you said thank you for taking the time to look it up. And then when you paid, you told me about how the gold dollar coins were from your allowance for doing your chores around the house. When I handed you one of our free booklets for kids, you thanked me and asked if it was ok to take two more for your sisters.

Basically at about 8/9ish years old (I'm guessing), you had much better manners than many adults I have served. You left me with a smile for the rest of the day and I wish I could have found your parents to thank them for raising such a wonderful young lady.

Once a 2 to 3 year old boy knocked a box of chewing gum on the floor where I work. We get adults who just can't be bothered to pick up stuff or put back what they pick up in the right place yet this todler who may or may not be toilet trained picked up the gum he knocked over. Your story made me think of him.

At work, we hand out numbers to place on the table. With the adults, they stick it in the purse or under their hand and then ignore when we call it out. The kids will have actually listened to or read the instructions and hold up their number and wave at us.

        /sigh

If only parents listened to what they told their kids...
