  • The actual joy of my job..........

As a few may know, I work at a rental car counter at a major airport. Most of the day I deal with the idiotic, the moronic and brain dead. The rewarding part of my job is when I see servicemen reunited with their familes.

Tonight at baggage claim I saw a serviceman returning home for what I imagine was the first time in a very long time. His wife was in tears, his three year old (I am assuming here) daughter was yelling, "DADDY DADDY!!!!!!" and he got to see his infant daughter for the first time. Pictures were being taken, the serviceman held his newborn daughter and he was the happiest man in the world.

The other agent at the counter and I had to stop watching because we were close to bawling. It was such a touching moment that we literally could not come up with words other than "Wow".

To the serviceman and his family, we wish we could have shaken your hand to express the gratitude we have for you and your family. Instead, we simply had the honor of watching you reunite with your loved ones after what had to be an interminable period away from home.

On the date of our nation's independance, I salute you. I thank you for your sacrifices and I thank you for simply making my week. We deal with people yelling, screaming, carrying on and even threatening us but what we get to see are reunions like we saw tonight. That makes rotten weeks seem so worthwhile.

I raised a glass to you tonight sir and I hope you are never separated from your loving family ever again.
