First a little background. My parents can be SC's, especially when it comes to tips. Growing up very poor (and I mean very), they can pinch pennies so hard they scream. Now for most of my life, I too was poor, and still am very 'working poor'. I do tip very good, unless the service is terrible, but it is usually only in the 10-15% realm, and getting my parents to tip is near impossible.
It was my parents 35 anniversary, 5 years ago. I told them "Pick anywhere, anywhere at all, my treat." To my confusion they told me they wanted to go to Pizza Hut. Not a fancy place, but not unexpected because they are (as I said) frugal.
We arrived there and the place was packed. However, didn't take long to be seated despite that. In minutes we had placed our order, and we expected a bit of a wait for our food and drinks. We had just filled the last seats available after all. About a minute later, our drinks were on the table. Which was a pleasant surprise.
The server (an assistant manager), a female who's name tag said 'Kate', I swear had psychic powers or something. Every time I, or my parents decided we wanted a refill, it would appear as if magic without us having to ask. Our food was served in a very timely manner (and actually very quickly considering), and the server checked very frequently to see if anything was needed..if I didn't know better I would have swore we accidentally walked into a five star restaurant. Now I am not sure why the Assistant manager was serving tables, but I was sure glad she was.
So at the end of the meal, as typical when I go out with my parents, I was going to leave the tip. A very generous one, for absolutely perfect service. My parents added a $10 dollar tip, which shocked me, trust me that is huge for them. So we had a $35 dollar tab for the entire meal, which I paid. Another $35 was left in tips, and you would expect that was that right?
Not quite. A week later I ordered online, and forgot to check the address (sometimes I have them deliver to my work) and sure enough they tried to deliver it at work and I was at home. It was totally my fault, and I called them up and told them so. I talked to Kate again on the phone, explaining what happened. I told her "Just have the pizza you tried to deliver to my work ready, I'll come in and pick it up." I had already paid for it online. She said that was fine, to come on in.
I go in, and she tells me "It'll be just a second." nobody was there, so I was a bit confused. She had them cook a NEW pizza (the other pizza had sit for like 10 minutes after they had tried to deliver it!). Well it was my mistake, so I definitely didn't expect them to do that. So I pull out money to pay for the new pizza. She refused the money! Absolutely wouldn't take it. I told her "But this was my fault! I should have checked where the pizza was going to!"
Her exact words was "I won't serve you cold pizza, and you already paid for your pizza."
She is now a full manager, and doesn't serve anymore unless things really have gone wrong, but I still eat there when I can. Never had that level of service from anybody else.

. Which is nice. Even today it has a very pleasant atmosphere, and decent wait staff. Not quite upto that standard. We are talking napkins when you ran out, drinks magically appearing JUST when you think "I need a refill", the old cups just as mysteriously vanishing, checking on the table every 15 minutes to see how everything was or if anything else was needed..all in a room without a seat empty. No clue how this was done..crystal ball? Telepathy? Had to be something. Yes, I've had very good service before, but this was on a whole different level.
