Let me describe our express setup.
In the space that you might be able to fit one full sized checkstand, we've managed to cram 4 TINY ones in. No belt, just a tiny counter, the register, and a tiny bagging area. Add in the fact that we only do paper bags and you realize how much space is at a premium.
To make it more confusing... they're setup like this
(hopefully that didn't get too mangled)
Basically reg 3 is directly behind reg 1. Same for 2 and 4. So we run one line for each side. If it's slow we get lax, but we were pretty busy this particular day.
People trying to cut in line on 1 and 3 aren't as big of an issue - there's a full size register just to the side of them that makes it difficult. But 2 and 4 are at the end of the registers, so people CONSTANTLY cut in line, either on purpose or accidentally.
Well, the other day an older gentleman cut, I'm pretty sure on accident. I mentioned "I'm sorry sir, but these ladies were in line before you, I'm going to take care of them first". Usually I get yelled at, or at the very least, a really dirty look or some guys will say something about how I wouldn't do that if they had tits (actually I'm more likely to let a cute guy get away with it and I've dropped that line a few times now). This guy apologized, first to the customers waiting, then to me. Wait what?!?
When it was his turn, I apologized and said I know the setup is confusing, I only took them because they'd been waiting longer. He apologized for trying to be in a hurry, and he went off on a huge tangent about how people are always in a hurry these days and have no respect for others, especially the youngest generation. A tangent that I agreed with 100% to be honest. He and I agreed that the world would be a much better place if people would just slow down and smell the roses. Personally, I'm in my early 30s, but I've noticed the most "entitlement" SCs in my store are either in their 50s or teens-early 20s. I'd estimate this guy to be late 60s/early 70s.
I didn't say anything about him running 25 items through my 10 or less express line, I honestly enjoyed talking to him and ringing up his order really did give me a chance to relax and just bullshit a little bit about some of the crap that we both feel is wrong with today's society, along with the merits (and downsides) of living in the big city vs a small town. He grew up in a small town, I grew up in a decent sized city with somewhat of a small town atmosphere, both of us with very "southern" upbringings. This wasn't a political discussion at all (I refuse to discuss politics with customers at work, since I'm pretty liberal, and Texas is very conservative), just a discussion about society and how people just need to slow the hell down and appreciate what's going on around them.
I hope I recognize him next time he's in my store.
