Heather at the Pizza Hut in High Point made my family's night. On top of generally excellent service and a cheery attitude (even while training a newbie!), she went out of her way to make the visit enjoyable. When we came in I asked her if it was possible to add $2 to our bill so that I could give the kids some quarters to play video games while we waited for the pizza. She said that she had no idea how to arrange something like that, but she gave my kids a couple of dollars out of her own tips so they could play. I would never ask a waitress to risk her hard-earned tips just so some kids could play games, much less expect one to volunteer them!
Needless to say, she got those dollars back -- along with a healthy tip -- when the bill was paid.
Bonus McD Story: Stopped at those Golden Arches today for a quick snack. My order was a bit confusing (additions & subtractions on two combo meals plus an extra drink), and I didn't realize until after I had paid that the extra drink had been forgotten. I apologized for the confusing order and asked her if she would go ahead and ring up the extra drink. Her manager had moved closer the moment she heard the words "I think there's been a mistake on my order". When they heard me apologize and ask to pay for the missing drink, they looked at each other in surprise. After a moment's hesitation, the girl behind the register handed me the cup and told me I didn't need to bother to pay.
After a brief exchange of "Are you sure?", and "Yeah, no problem", I responded with a happy "Thank you!", echoed by the little EvilPrince and EvilPrincess.
To which the manager responded, "No, thank you," before she headed off to deal with other issues.
From the way the manager replied, I don't think that they get many customers being polite about order mistakes there.
