  • Awesome Handling of a Scary Situation

This praising is for the staff at my school cafe. Yesterday, as I was sitting in the cafe, I happened to just get this...feeling. Anyone ever have this? A feeling that something very not-good is happening only 20 feet away from you? It was one of those (yay Spidey-sense. I thought I'd lost you).

I glance over toward where the cash registers were, and happen to notice that the guy currently at the register just...does not look good. He was pale, very disoriented-looking, and his body kept jerking randomly like someone was punching him in the gut. Standing there with him, staying very close by because this guy looked like he was going to just drop at any moment, was the cafe manager and some of the other staff. The whole entire time I'm watching, I've got my phone out, ready to dial 911 if I had to.

Finally, after they get him some food (and a second bottle of milk because he jerked suddenly and the bottle flew out of his hand when he went to take a drink), they got him to the table. Second bottle of milk ended up on the floor before I happened to notice that I wasn't the only one watching. The school's Director of Media Relations happened to have been having lunch at the time. She was already on the phone, talking to the school nursing staff. They got to the building in 5 minutes.

It turned out that the guy is diabetic, and his blood sugar level was very dangerously low and it was causing him to seize up. The both the staff at the cafe and the nursing staff handled it very well. They were very calm, they got him some juice (after the third bottle of milk turned out to be a no-go, they finally got him some orange juice) and some food, and they stayed with him for the next 15 or 20 mins to make sure he was ok. Thus, I say 'Well done, Bookcliff Cafe staff and MSC Nursing Staff. You guys rock.'
