  • Good deeds free with twenty-five cent deposit

This was just funny. I went to the discount supermarket yesterday (I love that store, meat costs half what it does at the store that's closest to my building), and as many discount supermarkets do, they have coin-release shopping carts. You put a quarter in the machine on the handlebars and it unlocks the cart; when you bring it back you plug it back into the lock and get your quarter back.

So I'm standing there rummaging for a quarter in my wallet when I hear a voice behind me: "(mumble) need a quarter (mumble)". I turn around and there's a young woman rummaging in her own purse. I shrugged and said "Yeah, sure," and went back to my wallet looking for two quarters. One for me and one for her. Eh, I can do a twenty-five-cent good deed.

I get the quarters out and turn back to her, and she digs around in her purse -- and we each hand each other a quarter.

I really need to get my ears checked, because I really thought she was asking me for a quarter, not spontaneously asking a stranger if they needed a quarter. But then, which would have been more likely. We giggled at each other, got our carts, and went our separate ways.

That's one of those cute moments that would just make me smile every time I thought about it for the rest of the day (if not the entire week).
