There's a lady at my work ($lady for the sake of privacy) who's been through what almost anyone will admit is the year (or so) from hell.
Then a couple days ago, I went to talk to my boss first thing in the morning & he looked white as a sheet. He said "I've just got off the phone to $lady's brother - her mother just died".
Turns out she'd had a heart attack - at $Lady's house. $lady had to do the CPR etc herself
and as she was healthy as a horse up til then, the police had to be involved etc. Very traumatic. And on top of everything else!!!!
So, I got another lady (there are only 3 of us
) to buy a big sympathy card, and I grabbed an envelope, sent some emails out telling people vaguely what happened, and asked both in email & did a walk around for donations for flowers.
We raised over $150 and people are still donating! We managed to get her a massive huge bunch of flowers, as well as an assortment of chocolates (I'm planning on also getting a bottle of wine, if the money keeps coming in, from an online store). She sent me (I'm guessing she knows I'm behind it
) a gushing text last night to say she got the flowers & how touched she is.
On top of that, the card is absolutely full, even the back page has been written on. I just sent that thru courier so that she gets it today (we found out they're doing the memorial service today, and it's family only so even though some of us had planned to attend, we won't have to).
I'm just so touched by and proud of my lovely coworkers for this. She's been through so much and I'm sure she's really touched by how much they obviously care for her.
- First she lost her dog, who she'd had for 10+ years... Healthy as a horse, something came up - suddenly had to be put down
- Then her partner had to be deported (he's from South America & hadn't told her he'd never sorted out the relevant paperwork, as he wanted to be with her)
- Then, he tried to sneak back into the country by using a fake passport & got arrested
- Then he tried to sneak back into the country by going over the Andes (I think?) with another fake passport and died suddenly on the bus

- THEN a couple/few months ago her dad got a terminal diagnosis & died after only a couple weeks in the hospital.
- All of this time, she's been battling with various health problems which are too many to go into.
