So, I went last night to see Nightwish in concert, with Kamelot opening. Kamelot played their set first, and they were fantastic. Then, as the crew was setting the stage for Nightwish, the bassist and woodwind player came out on stage.
"Anette (the vocalist) has become ill and has been rushed to hospital, so she will not be able to play tonight. We have a couple of options. We can take action that will turn this into a potentially very negative experience for everyone. Or, this is our proposal. We can have Elize from Kamelot come out here and sing the songs she knows, and we'll do the best we can with the rest." They let the crowd decide, and the crowd pretty much unanimously supported the idea of playing.
And they did, and everyone involved did a fantastic job with it. Nightwish did everything they could do to put on a show for their fans, and Elize Ryd showed some real courage in coming out on stage and singing a bunch of songs she'd never even practiced, let alone performed. (There were times that she was singing and holding the lyrics out in front of her. That's how little experience she had with the songs.) Even the crowd was incredibly supportive - Elize lost her place at one point during "I Want My Tears Back", and the entire crowd picked it up and sang while the bassist came over and helped her get back on track. And in the end, she did a fantastic job.
I'm so proud of my local metal fans for making that show such a positive experience for everyone involved, and after watching everything they did to put on a show, I'm even prouder to be both a longtime Nightwish fan and a brand new Kamelot fan.
