My BF and I were invited to go to a Halloween party at the local motorcycle organization's clubhouse. I'll call them LMO.

LMO's been very supportive of the derby team we're working with since one of our skaters is in the organization. So they've helped us out with some fund raisers, and we've gone to some of theirs to show support too.

(slightly annoyed tho... team support meant a lot to the skater-biker and only my BF and I showed up and neither of us skate. at least i had a team shirt on tho)

    But the good stuff:

I was pretty amazed by the clubhouse. It was pretty much a 4-truck garage that they were altering into a place to hang out, with couches, a TV, a non-smoking section that the ladies love (I think it has some bunks too for people who need to crash for the night). They're planning on building a men's bunk section too along with showers etc. And having their own private bar section doesn't hurt either.

I think my friend was a little embarrassed that it was clearly still a work in progress but I thought it was pretty nice.

What impressed me the most though... Two things really.

    1) I went to the event not knowing who they were raising money for. I was a bit surprised when I saw the clubhouse was within 500 feet or so of an elementary school... turned out the event was to raise money for the school.

    2) LMO's only been in that location for 3-4 months. They moved in around the same time a police satellite station opened up. (LMO's kinda between the school & the sat station I think). Word of mouth is that crime has dropped about 60% since then.

So to me that's pretty impressive. Not even there a half year yet, and already going out of their way with the local community, making their home someplace nice.

    Very cool indeed.

That is awesome! Those people have big hearts, that's for sure. I used to watch in fascination as the gathering for the Toys for Tots Motorcycle Parade would roll by my window for hours on their way to the Dan Ryan Woods.

Bikers as a rule have a soft spot for kids. One of my best friends is a biker and his bike club is always raising money for children's charities.

This reminds me of the biker group that works with children who have been abused (in all senses of the term.) They make the kids part of their group and give them numbers to call. If they even so much as get too scared the sleep, a group of bikers will show up and sit outside their house all night so that they feel safe.

It's pretty heart warming. I know a lot of bikers who are awesome, and I get annoyed when I hear people talking shit about them. Sorry, but when some punk who was really well dressed tried to rob the convenience store I worked at, and some big, scruffy guy in bike leathers and studs chases him off and sticks around until the end of my shift to make sure no one else messed with me. I'm going to not judge anyone by what they do or how they dress.

It's so I can get ideas out of my head, I decided to put it in a blog in case people are bored or are curious as to the (many) things in progress.
