Time for another "nugget o' joy" from good ole' uncle Rude...

As anyone working in the computer industry can attest, we all have our areas of expertise. Sadly, my area of "suck" would have to be TV tuners/capture cards. Haven't had cable for about 8 years now (bliss) so of course I haven't messed around with these "pain in the arse" cards or even hooking up my system to my TV.

So of course I answer a call ( that should have been placed to our techs ) that has to do with a SC that picked up a cheap PCI-E vid card, hooked it up & was only getting black & white on his tube...

Driver check, updates from mfr website, settings in control panel.... Nadda....

Me: Have you read the FAQ's on the website at all?

SC: Uhhh.... (seems to be the response of the day)...Where on the website?

Me: *shudder's knowing that this is gonna be a "spoon feeder"* Not offhand. Major mfr's have a pretty good database for this kind of thing. Take a peek through & see what's there.

    SC: Dur...Mkay...I'll look there.

Later that day.....In my shop....When, of course, it's busy.

SC: *Annoyed slackjaw tone* I called earlier about my vid card & couldn't get ANY help at all!! I just spent 30 minutes driving here blah blah blah....

Me: Ohh...You must be the person I spent 30 minutes with regarding your situation. I'd call that a pretty good try at helping you. *without even knowing what your system is*

SC: Uhh....I couldn't find ANYTHING on that stupid website... You need to help me... NOW!

Me: *Raised eyebrow* Ooookay....Let's see here...Oh look FAQ's...Oh look, your card...Oh look, trouble with output....Oh look, B & W display issue...*clicks print & hands solution over to luser*

SC: You must hit that website all the time!!

Me: Nope...Never even hit it before.

    SC: How'd you find it?!

    Me: I....read....the...page.......Anything else?

    SC: Durr....No *turns & leaves*

    Me: And you're welcome

Yet again, reading is just tooooooo F******G hard for some people to do...Naw, let's just get pissy & waste peoples time instead

Reading is hard. I know that's why I can't help but automatically read anything that in front of me.
How was I supposed to know someone was slipping you Birth Control in the food I've been making for you lately?

I bet it's the term FAQ that shut this guy down.

If you're not exposed to the Internet much, you'd have no idea what the heck a FAQ was. I'd have risked sounding condescending and explained what a FAQ was.

A lot of people just can't manage to ask about terms they don't understand, and those of us who are exposed to this sort of stuff all day long sometimes forget that there are people out there who would have no idea how to respond to someone saying, "O really." (where the heck did the whole orly/yarly call & response thing come from, anyway?)

True, i remember about 10 years ago, i was staring a temp position with a very large telecom co, and wasn't QUITE sure how to get there, or where to go once i was there.

so i go on their website, and see a link for "site map" - dummy me thought it was a map of the actual co and all the builidings! hahahahahaha

Sorry, but I have heard too many SC complaining about having to read all *THAT*, or telling me they had *ALREADY* read the manual - then I take one look at the product and tell them I can't get it to work without the manual to help.

They hand me the manual still wrapped in plastic!

            I know.

Even worse is the SpoonFeeder/Interruptosaurus/Compulsive Clicker super-combo SC.

Helping them navigate the web is like trying to feed strained carrots to a toddler who is running around and babbling a mile a minute at the same time.
