I know there are a lot of stories for how a virus gets on a PC but today was the first time I heard this:

"Not only does the porn popups appear when I open up my browser, but the PC turns on in the middle of the night and it downloads more porn!"

What I said: "Ok ma'am, I'll be more than happy to help."

What I was thinking about saying: "Why doesn't your teenage son or your husband just fess up to using it while you're asleep to download their porn and leave me with the mess to clean up?"

Because husbands and sons fear the consequences. And FTR, I once did a clean-up for a friend on their comp and I found some rather interesting pics. Said friend was a girl.

I think that she was more embarressed to say that her Husband or son are downloading the porno. Kind of like if she doesn't mention it, then maybe you won't suspect that her husband or son is a pervert. She most likely knew, and if she didn't some one needs to explain to her that most people are not as innocent as she thinks.

Porn happens. I dont care if you wank to ....whatever.....as long as it is legal. Child porn will not be tolerated. Anything else including animals....fine by me. I am not here to judge you, I am here to fix the PC.

most of the crap i've seen so far has been basic vanilla porn.

One guy couldn't find his stupid Blue E to get on the net. Got him situated, and since XP SP2 came out, it stopped popups. Well lo and behold, he was having a hissyfit because he couldn't / didn't see the yellow bar across the top. It was blocking him from getting into Playboy.

Another one I've seen was .tmp files in someones Temp bucket - he'd been swapping nudies with a woman in the Phillipines. He then gave PC to other users (without the w98 disc of course) and didn't clean out his crap.

He was also about #75 overweight and had too much shed for his tools. EEWWW.

I dont mind you know... even non vanilla porn. But Circuit City's brilliant idea of having our tech computer on a big 32" monitor = me making the mistake of trying to find files to back up and accidently displaying HUGE thumbnails of double horse penetration (Had to extract HDD to get data).

We had a nice situation where our owner brought in a laptop to our tech office to be worked on beacause it was running slow and had multiple pop-ups.

He said it was his daughter's boyfriends computer. We had to laugh long and hard.......uh, no pun intended, when we found around 10 gig of porn stashed away in a folder on the computer.

We thought for a moment....."do we tell the owner about this and ruin the kids relationship?"

When I bought, the laptop I am using now. I bought it from a customers of my moms job. I found a lot of porn on it. No child porn, or animals. I had to clean it out, and delete a hell of a lot of files. I finally installed Crap Cleaner, and had that help me. Finally got it working good. BTW, it is a windows 98

In her defense, it's not impossible. Computers can be remotely powered on. Combine that with crappy security, and yeah, it COULD happen. Not likely tho as it would require too much effort.

I'm thinking it's more likely that the porn came with a lovely virus that put script on the computer to turn on and download porn. I find the idea of a remote power on with no script to be a little far-fetched, but I'm also not really wise on the ways of hackers in that regard.
