  • WinXP "DOS"

Why the hell did M$ kill DOS with Windows XP? I had a boot problem on a laptop, OK , go to DOS (load up the installation disc, quit out of the install).

It is so FUBAR that it only allows you to do about 1% of what MS-DOS allowed you to do.

Plus, FORGET about going to any directory that has a space in it!!!!

Gee, I'll never want to go into the C:/WINDOWS/DRIVER CACHE folder in DOS! NEVER!!!!

I miss 6.022. Hell, I miss 4.01 that came on 6 5.25" floppy discs (double density)!

Actually, this can be done...just put quotes around the directory you want to go to. So if I went to the command prompt now and wanted to go into My Documents I'd type:

    cd "My Documents" <enter>

But yeah, it does pretty much suck now, trying to do anything in "DOS" (a pale imitation of earlier versions)

Use PowerShell (linky). It'll give you all sorts of control. PS is Microsoft's new command line shell and scripting too and is pretty dang powerful. I did a self-study class on it over the summer. It's a useful tool once you get the hang of it.

most of the time, you can also change to a folder with an invalid name under DOS naming conventions by changing to the first 6 letters, then a tilde, and the the number 1

          e.g. C:\Program Files will usually become C:\PROGRA~1

you may need a directory listing, but use the 1st 5 letters of the folder, and you should see it.

Not bad, I'll have to check it out later. Does it support USB and/or booting though USB? (PCs do)

ANd I tried the tilde, it didn't help.

Well, according to Technote 173, and this FreeDOS Wiki article, yes, yes it does.
