  • Can I Ask This Question Without Sucking? RE: Internet Service

So I've been using the free wireless that my apartment complex kindly provides, but the unreliability is getting to the point where I will need to either talk the complex into letting me BUY them a better router (can't see why they would refuse, but they probably will anyway, they're like that) or get my own service- the router always fizzles out at night when nobody is in the office to bounce it. Coincidentally, yesterday Internet Company A came to my door with a flyer offering me a very low introductory price for six months with their service.

Internet Company B offers a similar introductory price, but for three months only, or a higher introductory price for six months. I prefer Company B's service, having used both at other places.

Would it be sucky to call Internet Company B, explain that I am holding in my hand a flyer offering $$.$$ for six months from Company A, and ask if they are able to match or beat that offer?

Not sucky to ask, sucky to demand. Big difference there. And chances are, if you explain to Company B that you prefer their service, but would be willing to use Co. A if B can't give you a similar deal, then they would probably be more likely to give you a deal. Remember to be nice!

Sounds like a decent bartering tactic, since you actually are telling the truth. Just don't scream, shout, and pout etc. After that, it's a business negotiation.

It's great you actually have a choice. There is nothing wrong with simply stating to a company that you would prefer their service if they could match a competitor. You're actually doing them a favor by telling them outright how they can win your service, it's up to them at that point to decide if it's worth it to them.

You know, I fully expected to see that in one of the replies.

            Love that comic.

As to the topic at hand, I agree, as long as you don't insist, I'd bet that the sales people have some leeway in negotiating deals.
