I had a supervisor that would get so upset with me if I had more then 2 windows. Her only problem with it was that......wait for it...

She couldn't concentrate if more then 2 windows on her computer, so when I do it, it makes her feel stupid.

All the windows I had up were all work related so I wasn't slacking off, just doing my job more efficiently

Huh.... and to think that when I'm programming I'll have between 5-10 programs, a number with 10-20 tabs open each.

Ex: 2 ftp, 2 folders, internet browser, image editor, mail, music, programming IDE, notepad++, and probably a few things I'm not remembering. Oh -- and I'd frequently have a chat window open as well during it all. Sadly... other than the chat window and music -- all the others are required (my server for testing, clients when I know there's no big bugs -- so 2 ftp sessions).

For the people interested the simple explanation is that in the days of windows 3.1 the number of windows you could open was limited by processor memory which was and still is about 0.6MB. From windows 95 onwards the number of windows you can have open is limited by RAM and if that runs out SWAP space on your hard disk(so almost unlimited).

p.s if you run out of RAM your pc will slow down so on crappy work ones with 128MB of RAM you can still run in to problems if you open 30 odd windows.
Ooh I remember 3.1. But when that was a popular system, weren't personal computers more of a rarity? These people always seem to be very casual users.

You say it like it was far in the past. I mean until 6 months ago we still had one customer to the ISP running Windows 3.1 on a 486 to which we had to give Trumpet Winsock support.

Heck, Raps gets Windows 3.1 showing up on the server logs from time to time. Ask him, it's true.

My first computer had Win 3.11. I still fondly remember the DOS days and creating my own batch files to do stuff with...

I remember that too. I think that's what I had to use to connect to my ISP at the time, after I left AOL...

They where a rarity at home but most likely what your supervisors used to train on. Or even more likely what there trainers used to train on. e.g a kind of Chinese whispers effect.

Is true! F&R Man has owned up to occasionally doing this to test reconditioned computers. Another forumer (young Mr Pottinger if memory serves) likes to use BEOS.

Been a while since I've seen IE4, though.

I soon plan to upgrade to Haiku as soon as it goes Alpha, look on the bright side. If I had known about this site earlier I may have been logging in using an Amiga.

Multiple monitors were a pain on Amigas, but pull-up virtual screens were just plain fun. I upgraded my machine and was run 5-8 programs at the same time on different screens/windows back in 1986.

I have Adobe Dreamweaver, Adobe Lightroom, two Firefox windows with about 10 tabs apiece, and a spreadsheet open in Excel as we speak.

My machine, an IBM T60, isn't much liking it (considering that Lightroom is batch-editing and exporting photos), but I manage.

God, remember the days before tabbed browsing?
I think, therefore I am. But I am micromanaged, therefore I am not.

BeOs inspired open source project: http://www.haiku-os.org/ basically trying to bring the ideas from BeOS to modern hardware and new techniques, on the open source side.
