  • What's worse than a user who knows absolutely nothing about computers?

A user who thinks they know everything about computers.

I have a rather demanding email from one person saying I need to do a defrag on one of his employee's computers ASAP because they can't run a java application.

It would appear that a little knowledge truely is a dangrous thing.
A PSA, if I may, as well as another.

Preach on. They hear a term like that and think it is magic pixie dust.

Here's one to bring tears to your eyes...
My first tech job a guy who claimed to be MCSE asked me how to scan disk and defrag.
I demanded to be moved away from him cause I might smack him around with his binder if he asked me something like that again while getting so much more money than me.

I used to work with a guy who graduated from a well known computer college w/ MCSE, CCNA, N+, A+, and other certifications.

He spent 20 minutes arguing with a caller because he was saying they couldn't figure out what OS they were running.

They said they were running Windows 3.1 (we were supporting 95, 98, 98se and starting to support ME).

He also didn't know how to install drivers and though DOS was obsolete because the school told him that.

Sigh... don't they know it's format that make java run???

I still use DOS and DOS commands today.

I've used it when a DLL disappeared from an XP machine - transferred it to a thumb drive and had to import through cmd shell because it was the GUI DLL. I felt awesome, but I learned the hard way by having to create many boot disks for different games when I cut my teeth on computers.
