  • PLUG IN THE %&$* HUB!

Okay, so I need a little sympathy/pity here.

    First,

THE FRESHMEN ARE COMING! THE FRESHMEN ARE COMING!

Second, twice in two days, I've been called to offices where the luser can't log onto their computer.

What do I find (pretend you didn't read the subject line...)

THE ^&@$&^@)$&%*$Y^*@^$ HUB WAS NOT PLUGGED IN!!!!

You're not going to get internet if the hub is powerless!

Well, then it makes perfect sense.

A good 2/3 of my professors were hopeless with technology, if not outright hostile towards it. I would exclude from this my IT & Sciences professors. Oh, and my accounting professor, but he was just pure awesome anyway.

I cant do WoW anymore, I stop working, eating, sleeping, living... so I had to quit cold.

Btw King, great suggestion, I never thought of using them as flails.

Btw Tech. (was it jenny?) worse than a unplugged hub is a dead one, one of our two backbone switches gave up yesterday, had to rush out for a new one. Sigh.

I have... and I swear on the Book of Gord Almighty this really happened... seen a tenured professor, with multiple PhDs, require a WRITTEN FLOW CHART to understand how Velcro works. The original explanation, the one that the professor didn't get, was as follows:

"One side has a bunch of little hooks. The other side has a bunch of fiber-loops. Press them together and the hooks grab the loops until they're pulled hard enough to come apart."

                          Jenni, Tech, whatever.

We are actually in the process of replacing all the networking equipment in our admin (read: buildings with classes and/or offices) buildings. Then we'll take the stuff we replace, and stick them in the res halls. Everyone'll be happy.

Who uses hubs any more? Last time I saw a hub in use was at least 5 years ago, and I was replacing it with a switch.

                            Just curious

I still have a 10base-T hub (with a coax uplink!) that works. But I admit that it's not in use at the moment. At the very least, it makes a good backup unit, as while it's a lot slower than my other network gear, it's also in a metal case! Very solid.
