  • They make a pill for that you know ...

I returned from my lunch break today to find my voicemail light glowing evilly. Here's the message, in its entirety:

"Hi, this is John. I'm having ... issues ... with my toolbar."

In case anyone's curious, he couldn't figure out how to turn off the pop-up blocker in Google toolbar.

fixed that with an addendum. It's not a bad little tool, so long as you don't let it take over like it wants to.

I'm not a fan of ANY toolbars because if they get damaged they cause strange things to happen. When I see them on a client's PC I just uninstall them.

I dunno about uninstalling the toolbars you see on a client's comp. Some people like to use them, find them handy little pieces of software.

I usually tell whoever about the toolbars, and see if they want to keep em.

As much as I agree with you when it comes to toolbars, it is bad form to remove anything other than malware from a customers PC without their consent. If you have to wipe their computer and start fresh then I would wouldn't reinstall the app, but that is generally more acceptable.

Unfortunately, sometimes the toolbar themselves are the problems. Since it can be reinstall quite quickly, I personally would take them off to make sure the computer is clean and running properly. Then the inform the customer that the toolbar was remove to clean the computer, if it was something they use often. They can reinstall it. You'll be surprise how many people didn't want/use the toolbar but the free app they want/use installed it.

I had a tool bar one time that the comp tech had to go into the registry to make sure it was really gone. Can't remember who made it but I think they are gone now. Basically it made a open doorway out their for just anyone to come in and use the computer.

Probably Zango or Hotbar. I run accross those on most computers that have virus infestations. Google and Yahoo tend to be fairly safe (although I don't use either at home), so long as you don't just say yes to everything they ask you to.

And for god's sake, don't be like the user I found this week that had FOUR toolbars, and almost no browser window.

I actually have three toolbars going in Firefox, but they're definitely not of the Zango/Google/Yahoo variety.

One's the Mailman Toolbar, notification system for all my e-mail accounts. Another is Roboform, for my logins. And the third is something I really only keep up during hockey season and the latter part of baseball season, the RUWT scoreboard bar.

But trust me, I'm definitely not one of those "OMG TOOLBARS TOOLBARS INSTALL THEM ALLLLLLLLLL!!!11" people.

Next time I'm over that way, I'll try to get a screen cap of the switchboard op's IE. THAT'S scary. And I've already cleaned it out at least once.
