Somewhat sadly, that would be the highlight of my workday, some days.

I'm guilty of this today.

I bought a new DVD writer to replace the one that is going.

I pull out the old one, throw in the new one, boot up the system and it hangs at the Windows XP screen. Hmm, I let it sit. 30 minutes and still nothing.

Boot into safe mode and it still hangs. Hmm..

Disconnect the drive and the system works fine.

Rince and repeat for about 45 minutes and then it hits me.

I forget to set the jumper from master to slave.

One of the reasons I habitually use the "cable select" jumper. I'm actually surprised it isn't the default these days.

At school the library lost power. We have the ability to print to select printers from student-owned laptops. Think rather dark library (only emergency lights on) and a student says to a librarian who walks by....

SS: Why can't I print
L: we lost power
SS: But my laptop is on.

Some people shouldn't be allowed to us a computer.

Yeeesss, a Laptop... a device meant to run for a span of several hours with no power supply other than it's internal battery... Hmmm, I wonder why on earth it would still be running when there's no power to the whole rest of the building?

Must be a mystery of the universe...
