One of my more "experience" techs punched down a phone line using a 110 blade.

Luckily the damage wasn't too bad and I was able to get it working (and it was for the 911 line, too).

(Only the real geeks will get this one).

One is a 110 blade (the one with one side longer than the other) and I think the other is a 66 that doens't cut.

This is obviously something arcane about crimping cable, which is something I've never done.

OK, when you need to punch down cables most of the time (here in the US) there are two types of jacks and two types of blades.

The top half in LG's picture is a 110 blade - used for punching down RJ-45s etc. - the port itself is usually two metal jacks that come out and you put the cable in between, then use the punchdown to get it all the way in (and the connectors strip the cable enough to make a connection).

With an analog phone line, it's more like an exaggerated "J" (almost a hook) and an | next to it, under the hook. You need to weave the cable in between them and use a 66 blade, which basically covers for the two parts, and then you push the wire in with it.

So, both go straight in but one can't have the blade go straight in. He used the blade that goes straight in and almost broke the bread board but definately didn't get the cable in correctly.

And the only reason why we have the analog line is for 911 calls, so it's a little important.

I've had the "cut" side flipped around on the "wrong" side of the terminal when doing a punchdown. I've banged my head against the wall more than once for doing that.

I did that myself. On a jack that is located outside. In December, in New England. So I was cold, , and at myself.

The only think I can think of is HOW??? I can understand getting the cutter ends of the tip mixed up, but mistaking a 110 for a 66?

Looking back on all the mistakes I have ever made, I don't feel so bad now.

In a pinch, you can do just about everything from BIX to 66 to 110 to 112 with two pairs of needle-nose pliers and a deep breath.

And yeah, far too many times over the career have I cut the wrong side of the wire. Usually leading to lots of profanity.

Heh, one of my fingernails is too strong to cut, so i have occasionally used it and closed my eyes.

Easy - it wasn't a mistake. I asked him to come up and help me with it since I had never really worked with analog lines before (if I had known how easy it was I wouldn't have asked him).

He insisted he was using the right blade because the 66 didn't push down on the wire and could loop back out. Sure enough, the line didn't work two days later and I punched it down with the right blade and it worked perfectly.

Nothing like getting a 96VAC shock in the morning to wake one up.

Sadly, this is usually followed by the smoke being let out of the Ring Generator and thus lots of scrambling through the day.

Lesson I've learned about lines & sharp thingys: do not ever EVER EVER cut labels off of fiber optic with a knife.

Just sayin.
