  • It doesn't work, lady!

Sometimes, I assist on the website that supports our agency. People can call in or chat and get basic tech support (who do I sign up, what browsers work, etc.). Generally speaking, I enjoy this. I'm in a semi-different department and I have the reward of knowing I helped someone.

The bane of my existence is a certain company that provides internet put also changes IE. I will call this company Avoid Our Listings. Our site is not compatible with Avoid Our Listings. We tell them to use IE, Firefox, etc. We tell them as much on the front page. But I've learned that people don't read.

This woman comes over my chat and states she's having issues. She had supplied her email address and lo and behold, she's using Avoid Our Listings. I tell her our website doesn't work with the virus you pay for and offer her written steps on how to get on or site. Remember, this is in chat.

She states she has no idea what I said. rinse, wash, repeat 3 times. Finally she takes the hint and tries my instructions. I loved her comment, however:

"why doesn't your site work with Avoid Our Listings
tell pres obama to fix that" [sic]
I have a...thing. Wanna see it?

No, you only call McCain for chip issues...

Funny thing is that Avoid Our Listings already OWNS a browser and/or company that's not based on IE in any way at all. And even if they've run it into the ground during the past decade, they should still have enough personnel to realize how to make something that follows standards. Then again, there was a time when this company tried to SHUT OUT the internet from it's own proprietary systems.

Why? IE 8 (The one that's in beta) still only follows about 80% of established standards, and it's brand new.

We're talking about Netscape here. AOL *owns* Netscape. Netscape's browser is built on Mozilla, which is pretty close to full standards compliance (and certainly tries).

Yet they still base their own browser on an old version of IE.

I know, but I was illustrating the fact that just because a company that has people that should know, that's no reason for that knowledge to actually be used.

TW has shrugged off Avoid Out Listings yet?
