When we get rid of old equipment at work, I don't even bother to clean the drives. The only "sensitive" application is our database. With that, there's only an .exe file (plus some drivers) on the hard drive. The actual data is kept safely on the server--without it, the database won't even load. However, I do check for spreadsheets and other reports...since some of our (l)users can't figure out how to save things to the server 
Anyway, with the data removed, the old computers are either scrapped, or repaired and donated to charities.
