  • Jenni rant, part 8,675,309

Okay, so the title should have warned you, I'm ranty right now.

I am getting soooo sick and tired of computers! I don't know if this is burn out, or what, but they fucking SUCK!

All I've been doing for the past week is reformat computers. Reformat, reformat, reformat.

Straw? Meet camel. Camel, meet straw then meet the ground. In pain. And Death.. disease.

I don't know how old this computer is. It's a compaq nx9030. IT SUCKS ELEPHANTS!

First, as a given, it's slower than 9000000000 degree below 0 molasses.
It's recovering from "a serious error" like every second.

The faceplate is missing from the CD drive. I had to pry the thing out to realize it WAS the CD drive.

The network drivers didn't work, so I had to connect up our external HD to it, in safe mode, of course, to pull the data off.

I learned that it didn't want to connect to our external CD drive to reformat the sucker (before I realized that it DID have a CD drive.

The thing is just... dirty. Physically dirty. The case looks like it's been dropped into the dirt and the laptop itself doesn't look much better.

It's service pack one of XP, if even that.

The kicker is that the luser isn't even supposed to HAVE THE DAMN THING! It's an old loaner laptop of ours!

Then, to make matters worse, I just don't feel good. If I hadn't been taking off here and there the last two weeks, I'd probably be at home. Remember, always check expiration dates on dairy products. I have a headache, my stomach hurts, I'm dizzy, and I see fun little sparklies when I stand up.

So, I don't feel good, I'm cranky, and I'm SICK AND TIRED OF REFORMATTING COMPUTERS! I could do it in my sleep! In fact, I plan to try that this afternoon!

My manager is getting a tiny bit grumpy because my work orders are building up. Well, yes, when I'm attached to my chair, running a hardware diag and then reformatting the second most important user computer on campus, I'm not going to be able to do work orders, and YES! I WOULDN'T PASS A WORK ORDER TO MY BOSS IF I COULD REMOTE INTO THE DAMN THING AND DO IT REMOTELY. WHY EVEN ASK???????

The only good thing about being attached to my desk while reformatting is that the reformat time and the install times is a great time for me to work on LOLifiying my imac. I set it up to change the background picture every minute, and pointed it to my LOLcat folder. So, now, of course, I have to search icanhascheezburger.com for new pics. That and chatting with Gatekeeper, and of course, blowing off steam here in CS is the only thing keeping me..., well, here.

I want to get out of here. I want to hear back from the college in StL that I applied to work at. I want lunch at a set time, not whenever the AA gets back. I want out of this town! ARRRRGGGGHHH!!!!!

Okay, so I think I ranted out.

If anyone actually made it through all of this, I think they deserve a medal.

Oh, I'm sure, I keep very detailed records.

I went to lunch, and got the check from my side job deposited, and you know, ATE, so I'm feeling much better.

Why do people keep using computers that old? Nothing runs on them.

I actually saw a Packard Bell abandoned at a bus stop last summer. I guess the owner decided it just wasn't worth the effort of hauling it about on public transit. I would have to agree.

Sounds rough TA. Good luck on the new job though. And congrats on beating that beater computer into submission.

Well, what do you expect? It's a Compaq, or "Crapaq" as I call them
I've had a couple, and they were crap. Only good for target practice, or for holding doors open Oh, and if you ever want to pound a computer into oblivion, I'll *gladly* supply the 40-pound fence maul

I'm close, believe me, I'm close.

I got the damn thing up and running. I got office and our av installed. Now I'm waiting to hear back in the luser supreme needs any thing else installed on it.

                  EDIT!!

OH! Of course, while I was fighting with the laptop from hell, I had three student craptops come in. From the description, I bet each and everyone has AV 2009 on it. Please, someone, shoot me now. Geek King, you're close... please?

Malwarebytes, I love you, but I hate running you.

I've gotten to this point. That's the reason I've changed my major from computer-related studies to multimedia graphics.

Good luck with the change of schools.

Strange. I've never had a problem with my Compaq laptop. The only work I've ever done to it was self-induced and not *really* necessary (larger HD and more memory were the only things I've done to it).

Of course, I'm a computer geek, and know how to keep problems from cropping up, which may make a difference...
