  • howed you miss that

through it's not my job allot of my less technically minded buddies come to me when the do something on a computer. basically i do software stuff and have another friend who will do hardware.

a friend calls me on the pone and let me just say it is hard doing this on a phone because i can't tell what your doing at all.

    never presume
    b= Buddie
    me= who else

b: i got "file name" from internet could help me set it up
me: no problem i use "file name" all the time find the zip file for me.
    b "wheres that?"
me ohhh boy her we go" when you downloaded the file it would have asked you where to download to what did that say?"
    b:" my docments"
me: that was to easy " that were it is please go in to it"
    b:"ok done that now what"
me:hey hes actually got it he normally very bad at this"open the rar file for me"
    b:"done and done"
me:"ok now take the "file name" out of the rar. run the "file name" for set up"
b:" ok it wants me to set up the video configuration"
me:"this next bit is a bit complicated first we need to shrink down the program"
    b:" ok.."
me"then right click the screen whats the size seting for me"
    b :"tells me setting"
me:"ok that is good now bring back the program and select a video seting of the same size i suggest"special setting"
    b:"it says i can't use "special setting"
me: odd i can run it"ok then use "normal setting" instead
    b":great"
me: "ok now run the program map"
    b:"how do i do that?"
me:"that not to hard really but we need to shut down program"
    b:"ok"
me"the easy way is to put the program file into the same place as the program it self""
    b:"i can't do that"
    me"why?"
b:"becuse it still i my documents"
Me: the idea hits me like a ton of bricks "is it still rar?"
    b:"yes..."
me: i knew that was to easy "ok i guess we can do that now just right click say extract to the put the program some where"
    b"where?"
me""i suggest "location" its easy to remember because you will need to put your program maps there"
b"the i should put the program map there to"
    me"yes"
    b:"done"
me "great now run the program to set up the controls in any way you want or just play the game i won't use to much of your money"
(in my buddies defense he is brain damaged from a car crash and normally that bad. it just computers.)

i don't know how many times i downloaded something and forgot where i put it... often end up downloading it again because i just can't find it and search takes too long...
To err is human, to blame someone else shows good management skills.

Redownloading takes longer than searching? o_O

Whenever I forget where I downloaded something to, I just do "save as" then note where it pops up, since it uses the last folder I downloaded to. Yours doesn't do that?

It can - I sometimes lose downloads at work. If I forget to check where they are going they can end up on my C drive, on my space on the network, on shared space on the network or in the separate drive for shared programs... I never understand why it will suddenly default to saving things in weird places (and why it always does it to my Excel sheets as well as downloads).

I don't think our computers are very well set up. There are also no (technical) limits to being able to download and install and generally whenever you log onto a computer you have admin privileges for the individual computer...

We're all fairly well meaning and I don't think anyone is deliberately running stuff they shouldn't (as defined by common sense, there isn't a policy and moderate personal use is certainly accepted). However other than myself and one other colleague the level of computer skills is not high and it is really not a good idea to allow people who will click on anything, sign up to malware, etc. have that kind of power Management tend to be worse.

hmm, point taken. I was approaching it from the home user perspective of you've only got one drive, maybe two, to check. Depending on your connection and the file size, I can see it being faster even with 2 or 3 drives, I suppose.
