Most I've ever had is 45-something thousand. Half of which were various flavors of Smitfraud. This was a laptop with woefully out-of-date antivirus, no antispyware and an owner who thought that turning the computer off would get rid of the things

Almost a full day of wash-rinse-repeat scans and reg hacking to get it to a halfway usable state. In the end I get paid 60% of my quote because "you didn't tell me it would take so long" This was a family friend so my mom was on my back to "do her a favor".

"I had no idea it would be so much, I won't pay it."
"Well, that's all right! We can just put it right back in there."
"We certainly can, Dr. Venkman." (oh, if only...)

And I thought my 4,694 objects on a laptop was a record. The thing was so slow wiht all the crap on it. I don't know how the user worked with it for almost a month like that. Over 90 seconds to open Word 03.

I thought when I found over 25,000 (documented) and over 32,000 (undocumented) objects, that was going to be hard to top.

Makes me wonder exactly how many of those were tracking cookies. Most AS scanners report them as problems as well as the real things, even thought they are only a minor thing.

Fifteen seconds into the scan, and it has already found 154 trouble files.

I can't wait to see what the final tally is. I think I'll run a couple more scans before I OK the poor machine.
I've had some customers where within seconds of starting the scan we would find close to that amount of viruses your customer had or more... I once had a lady find 1,000 infectious files total in Malwarebytes. Those kind of viruses are a real bitch to remove, especially those damn MS Antivirus 2009 and Antivirus 360 infections. One of worst viruses I've came across was so bad (this virus didn't allow the customer to boot his computer both in normal and safe mode) that right off the bat I had to tell him that he had to reload Windows. My co-worker L once had a customer who had such a horrible virus that wouldn't even allow the customer to reinstall Windows completely.

You win. That Chernobyl virus only hit roughly 20k files.

(yeah, it pretty much got my ENTIRE machine, but with the removal tool, I only lost the original carrier program)

How is that even possible? You wipe the drive, and the virus and everything else is gone, is it not?

That's what I was thinking. DBAN it, and nothing is there anymore. Maybe they didn't power off long enough to clear the memory on the board or video card? I would still think you'd need an OS install before it could replicate itself back into the drive...

Not if it instigates a constant read/write cycle that thrashes the drive.
