See if the mac guy has a disc of TechTool pro he can lend you, it's pretty easy to use, to boot from it just insert it and then restart the mac and hold C when you hear the bong... it can test HDD and ram, plus other stuff

You're missing the post of "I'm not allowed to do anything." Also, the only time I see him is when he makes a specific visit to the place, so if I did see him, and he didn't have it on him, it'd probably be weeks before I saw him again.

One thing you can do without extra tools or opening it: open Disk Utility (in Applications/Utilities) and get info on the drive. There should be a line in there about SMART status - that should be a good indicator of whether it's physically failing or not.

You went from an eMac to an iMac... If the issue wasn't already resolved with another replacement, I was going to jokingly say to wait for the oMac to come out.

Alas, I was too late and failed. lol

                Congrats on the replacement

Nah...more like aMac, eMac, iMac, oMac, uMac, and sometimes yMac.

Hard drive is on its way out, seriously.... Happened to me twice.
Save what you can off the machine, because it's about to have a catastrophic drive failure, which will cause you to lose EVERYTHING.
oy that happened on my first desktop. grinding sounds. Had a new hdd put in & had the old one left behind as file storage. ironically the old drive started working better after that.

and congrats on the new mac
