  • Conflicter? Na, how about the Diana?

I walked back in from lunch into chaos. We had extreme speed issues issues across the network. Databases weren't getting enough bandwidth to open.

The network admin breezes through, mumbling something about the problem being within the building, and then disappears.

The dept head comes over and tells us that a student was spamming packets, and while on a separate Vlan, it was stealing bandwidth and processing power from the fac/staff VLAN. So, we turned off the building the student was in.

Then the server admin comes over and looks at the student laptop I was trying to work on. He unplugs the network cable from it. I'm rather..

He immediately gets on the phone with the network admin. I tell him I just plugged it in, and he said "oh" and disappeared.

Our head of marketing comes in with her cell phone, which I'm trying to set up, but the server admin comes back, and has me trace out the cabling from my student VLAN switch. As soon as I show him where it plugs into the wall, he unplugs it and disappears... again.

Finally the network admin shows up with the server admin, and they go tearing through my area. Then the interrogation starts. "What do you have plugged into the switch???" "NOTHING!" "It's got active lights, what's plugged into it??" I'm searching my office, but there's NOTHING. "I DON'T KNOW!!!!!"

Finally they start following the active ports on the switch, and found out. A network cable had both ends plugged into the switch. Apparently, this is BAD.

    "IT'S NOT MY FAULT!"

The server admin informed me it started at 1:20pm. "SEE?!?!?" I exclaimed, "I was at lunch! IT'S NOT MY FAULT!"

I found out, after questioning the office staff, that the AA got a little frustrated with a network cable, and thought it was unplugged from the switch. Without tracing ANYTHING, she saw an unplugged cable sitting next to the switch. Thinking that was it, plugged it in. The student she was working with decided to leave the computer, so the AA left it and didn't think of it again until I brought it up.

And she wants the tech position that's opening up.

Na, they started laughing it off once the network was no longer crashed. Then my old boss started spreading word that it was MY fault, and that wasn't happy mojo.

Apparently, the student who we thought that was infected was actually sending out a packet in response to my switch sending out a packet. So, fixing one fixed the other.

            Bad boss, bad!!!

Yeah it is very bad to plug a switch back into itself, causes it to turn into nothing more than a christmas decoration til you unplug one end of the cable.

OH good lord. Yeah, it's always fun when people blame others for their mistakes. More so when your boss blames YOU for THEIR mistake.

I've had this in some of my stores, too. Someone doesn't have connectivity? They start to plug in and unplug random cables on the router and switch - then I get a high priority ticket to come sort out the SNAFU.

Seriously. If the network is so critical? Then WHY THE F*CK isn't the network closet / server room locked?

I want to try this. I won't though. My large university might be angry.

And they probably have it set so it won't work. Which the network admin set as soon as he figured out what happened.

Guess what?!?!?! I just did it myself!

I was having problems with a student laptop, so instead of using wireless, I pulled out a cable and plugged it into my student switch. It still wouldn't connect, so I went over, and right where I thought the incoming connection was, was an unplugged cable.................. so I plugged it in.

                        I got yelled at.

perhaps the network guys should label that cable with something so it isn't mistakenly pluged in. i realize thats an odd thing for them to do, being a rational idea, but it might just work

Admittedly Jenni, If I was there, I wouldn't yell at you.

I wouldn't let you live it down, but I wouldn't yell at you.
